// LOST/FOUND - A THROWBACK IN POETRY & MUSIC //
What do we remember best from childhood? Cuts and bruises from the playground, notes from a movie soundtrack, the joy of ice kacang? Or how the world seemed strangely bigger then, but also smaller? Come hear four incredible poets — Izyanti Asa’ari, Max Pasakorn, Mok Zining, and Theophilus Kwek — alongside singer-songwriters Hell Low and Leslie Loh, as they weave a tapestry of memories and sound.
Leslie will be performing songs from his latest album Chimera together with some familiar old tunes from previous albums.
Hell Low will be performing songs from The Pedra Branca EP, Long Songs From Hell Vol. 1 and REGRET in DADGAD
Event Schedule:
Poetry Session: 19:30 - 19:50
Leslie Low live performance: 20:00 - 20:30
Poetry Session: 20:30 - 20:50
Uncle Hell Low live performance: 21:00 - 21:30
The Artists:
Max Pasakorn is the author of creative nonfiction chapbook A Study in Our Selves (Neon Hemlock Press, 2023) and co-editor of Perks of Being Dumped (Marshall Cavendish, 2024). Their writing sits at the crossroads of queerness, food and pop culture. Read Max’s other work in Split Lip Magazine, Foglifter Journal, SUSPECT Journal, Eunoia Review, Strange Horizons, Honey Literary and Chestnut Review.
Mok Zining is obsessed with random things: orchids, arabesques, sand. Her first book, The Orchid Folios (Ethos Books 2020), was shortlisted for the 2022 Singapore Literature Prize in English Poetry. Currently, she is at work on an essay collection, The Earthmovers.
Theophilus Kwek has published four collections of poetry, two of which were shortlisted for the Singapore Literature Prize. He is the 2023 winner of the Cikada Prize, and part of the Forbes 30 Under 30 Class of 2024. His next collection, Commonwealth, will be published in 2025.
Izyanti Asa’ari is a writer and co-founder of Fellow Design. Her works have appeared in anthologies This is Not a Safety Barrier (Ethos Books, 2016), to let the light in (SingLit Station, 2021), New Singapore Poetries (Gaudy Books, 2022), The Opening Act (Layl Ash-Shayr, 2024) and others. She is interested in studying the gestures the body makes against its own will, including that of cities.
Hell Low’s music is steeped in melancholia. Like words in a diary, his lyrics are a mirror to a soul drawn into despondency by the rituals of living and dying in Singapore. He sings with absolute honesty, flitting between anguish, despair and hope. His intricate guitar textures have a tendency to drift away on tangents unconstrained by the folk genre.
Leslie Low was the vocalist/guitarist of Humpback Oak in the 90s. Subsequently, for the next decade and a half, he was a member of several music collectives including The Observatory, Magus, Hanging Up The Moon, Piblokto, and Pan Gu. In 2017, he released a string of solo albums in the folk acoustic vein. Two of them recorded live and unadorned in the studio; Nature and Child of the Island. A collection of demos recorded on his phone, Singapore in my Bones, was also released for Pameran Poskad, an exhibition series by Keyakismos in 2018. Followed by a collaboration with ex-bandmate Victor Low (AFFIXEN, Concave Scream, The Observatory) called The Monsoon in 2019. During the pandemic years, he wrote a lot of songs that began loosely as ‘The Mountain Trilogy’. Starting with Be Still, The Mountain in 2020, and subsequently Sand and Beyond The Mountain in 2021. A lost album was also released in 2021 called Blood Red Pale White. A double album that was recorded and mixed after Singapore in my Bones from 2018 to 2019. In October and December of 2022, Nightingale and The Drill were released respectively. He had been listening to two Japanese bands; Off Course and AB’S. This birthed the songs that ended up on these two albums. His next full-length album, Voyager, released in September of 2023, was written primarily on a nylon-stringed guitar. After having dabbled in open-tunings for almost two decades, Voyager was written completely in standard tuning; a process that had begun with some songs on Nightingale but was explored in its totality, with renewed vigour on Voyager. This album harkens back to the sound of Humpback Oak, bringing the listener full-circle back to where it all began. Released in October of 2024, his latest album, Chimera, features collaborations with Sean Lam (Hanging Up The Moon), Alexius Cai (Piblokto), Fuzz Lee (elintseeker), Victor Low (AFFIXEN) and Evan Tan.
