Gathering Roots
From 19 to 27 July, we created a multi-sensory public art installation at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Marking the 10th anniversary of the Gardens as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Gathering Roots was both a celebration and a gentle archival act — honouring the everyday connections we make with nature and inviting all visitors to reflect on their own roots.
We designed 5 plant-inspired sculptures: Aranthera Anne Black, Dendrobium UNESCO, Dipterocarpus grandiflorus, Musa gracilis, and Dipterocarpus sublamellatus. These pieces reflect our artists’ interpretations rather than exact botanical specimens. Each sculpture was crafted using a diverse range of materials including fibreglass, clay, organza, aluminium, and polyurethane foam core. The installation was further enhanced with CRT televisions, digital projections, and live plants to create an immersive experience.

In addition to the five sculptures, the installation featured two short films, one at each site, exploring the questions: What’s your most memorable Singapore Botanic Gardens story? and Plants and people: What connections do we share? The photos and quotes in these films were memories shared by the public through our open call. The voiceovers were performed by PLAY! team members and our collaborators, adding a personal and heartfelt touch to the installation.
